John Joseph Kelly was born on June 24, 1989, in Chicago, Illinois, United States.

At the early age of 19, on May 15, 1917, he was enlisted as a private in the United States Marine Corps in Port Royal, South Carolina.

Similarly, on September 5, 1917, he joined the 7th Company, 6th Regiment, at Quantico, Virginia.

During the fighting at Blanc Mont Ridge, he ran 100 yards in advance of the front line and attacked an enemy machine gun nest.

For his bravery on the Blanc Mont Ridge, he was awarded both the Army and Navy Medals of Honor.

Similarly, for his participation in the Rhine River and the occupation of the Koblenz Bridgehead, he was honorably discharged with the character, “Excellent” at the Marine Barracks on August 14, 1919.

Sadly, on November 20, 1957, America lost a hero and was buried at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.

Joseph Kelly received the Army Medal of Honor and the Navy Medal of Honor on October 3, 1918, for his bravery in running through his own barrage 100 years in advance of the front line and attacking an enemy machinegun nest, killing the gunner with a grenade.

He shot another member of the crew with his pistol and returned through the barrage with eight prisoners.
